It's been a long time since I've updated what's going on with my journey through medical school. Here is a short summary of what's happened since last September:
Today marks the end of the 7th week (out of 12) of my Surgery core rotation. So far, I can honestly say that Surgery is out as an option for me. I can't deal with the hours, the egos, or the lifestyle. Being in the OR is very interesting and I enjoy scrubbing into cases, but I just don't see myself making a career out of this. The entire rotation has been divided into 9 mini rotations, including 3 surgical teams, ICU, orthopaedics, urology, anesthesiology, emergency, and week of outpatient work.
I have a total of 13 overnight calls, 7 of which I have completed thus far. We have to be in the hospital for that 24 hours, taking care of various responsibilities, the most consistent of which is compiling the lab data and vital signs of all of the patients on the surgical service for the morning reports. Other activities include scrubbing into emergency surgeries, doing consults in the ER, and fetching dinner for the residents.
Here's how the rest of the schedule is looking for now.
