An Anniversary

For any Caribbean medical student there is one day that stands out in his or her memory as the single greatest day since starting medical school - Independence Day. I speak not of July 4, September 21, or May 28. Nay, I speak of the day when you finally get on an airplane, look out the window, and flip off the island for the last time as you soar happily away from the third world country you've lived in for the past two years, secretly hoping the entire rock gets flooded under a giant tsunami...but I digress.

For Your Humble Observer, that date is April 16, 2008. Today marks the one year mark of my leaving the island and returning back to the mainland and happiness.

In celebration of this glorious event, I will publish a series of e-mails that I sent to family and friends over the final four days of my tenure in St. Maarten. These will be presented as a series of "Retrospectives" posts and will contain 5 'Top 5 Lists' I compiled prior to leaving the island. I hope you enjoy delving into the mind of YHO one year ago.
